Gardening in the Golden State
In spite of regional bickering among horticulturists‚ California gardeners are pretty much alike.
Sure‚ many popular plants change dramatically from one area to another‚ especially in the heavily-populated areas of Southern California‚ San Francisco Bay area‚ and the Central Valley.
But some universal truths have been uncovered about gardening in the Golden State. The challenges of climate and soil affect us all‚ and we look for solutions with the same gusto. High-end tropical plant collectors in Santa Barbara have nothing over backyard daylily hybridizers in Fresno; miserable native soil and fog affect all equally.
Water shortages‚ onslaughts of invasive exotic plants‚ and the crushing development of new housing tracts are major ecological issues. Yet more direct concerns are every gardener’s frustration over getting water to cherished garden plants on a regular basis‚ weeding the flower bed‚ and getting along with new neighbors.
