San Bernandino County Fair Is Big Fun for Little Ones

San Bernardino County Fair
California is big. San Bernardino is big. So it is only natural that the San Bernardino County Fair would be‚ well‚ big.
Held at the San Bernardino County Fairground‚ the annual event attracted more than 105‚000 people over 20 days last May.
“We have all the traditional stuff – photography‚ pickles‚ different classes of painting‚ quilts‚ a pie contest and things that kids built by hand‚” says Ken Alstott‚ CEO of the San Bernandino County Fair Board.
Included are the ugliest pie contest and ugliest cake‚ among myriad other oddball entries. The event’s Web site‚ www.sbcfair.com‚ has complete information.
The carnival portion of the fair is also big – it boasts more rides than Disneyland. Other entertainment includes a Sea Lion Splash (a sea lion show)‚ the Turkey Stampede (a lady who actually has taught turkeys how to race) and Farmyard Fun. This is where kids learn how to milk a cow‚ dig in boxes for potatoes and play in a corn box‚ as opposed to a sandbox.
There is a kids’ craft area where they can make a dirt baby. They take a piece of women’s hose‚ tie off one end‚ put grass seeds and dirt in‚ tie it off and decorate the face with ears‚ nose‚ eyes and so forth. The kids are told as they water it after the fair‚ the seeds would start to grow and look like hair.
Feedback after the fair confirmed that everyone “loved the dirt babies‚” says Alstott. “That was the biggest thing.”
“This fairgrounds has taken a different‚ more family-oriented approach‚” he says. “This year‚ we were actually up in senior count‚ which was a good sign. Seems like everyone had a great time.”
